Presentation:
Physically Mickey is a bit muscular and imposing despite his height. He uses his well-deserved reputation to intimidate anyone he needs or wants to in order to make up for any physical shortcomings. He does manage to bulk-up while he’s in juvie because there’s not much to do other than work out (Ian suggested that he read but Mickey told him to fuck off).

At a glance Mickey seems confident and maybe a bit full of himself. He and everyone else knows what he’s capable of so why not walk around like he owns the neighborhood? No one is going to fuck with him unless they have a death wish and Mickey likes it that way. When you get to know him a little bit he still appears cocky but it’s really only because he depends on his reputation as a badass and an asshole. It helps that he’s emotionally stunted and would rather beat someone up than talk to them.

Mickey will never come off as a nice guy, no one will ever look at him and think that he cares about other people. Most people probably think he doesn’t care about himself either, which is true. He’s reckless and lives to feel adrenaline coursing through his veins when he does something illegal or stupid. He’s a thug who doesn’t really care about his personal appearance or hygiene (at one point he’s called the “dirtiest white boy in America” because most of the time he’s covered in dirt from who knows what).

Motivation:
Mickey hates himself. He hates himself more than anybody else and more than anyone ever could, which is a huge accomplishment considering very few people actually like him. He’s the product of his environment: growing up in the Southside of Chicago (aka the wrong side of the tracks) with a drug addicted and now dead mother, a drunk convict of a father, four thug older brothers who can pull of a con/drug deal/weapons deal with the best of them, and one younger sister who sleeps around. Being a Milkovich means people hate and fear you, they just didn’t realize that it often meant hating yourself and fearing each other.

With that self-hatred comes a lot of anger. Mickey is a very aggressive character, if he has a problem he solves it with his fists (or feet or knives or guns…) rather than his words. He doesn’t know how to use his words and will default to beating his problems away even if the results kill him inside (see: beating up Ian). But when he does use his words it’s to maximize damage to the other person even when he’s really trying to protect. He doesn’t do sharing his feelings or talking things out, his fuse is way too short for that. Occasionally he’ll try and write the problem off by blowing off the subject but if it persists don’t expect him to stay calm.

He tries really hard to hide his feelings about everything, he wants to appear detached, he wants to just be the neighborhood thug and nothing else. Except he doesn’t. Everyone just assumes that he’s going to land his ass in jail or get himself killed so he just goes with it, it’s much easier than letting other people get close to him. In Mickey’s own words he’s “fucked for life,” and he believes that because no one really has any faith in him to be anything else. So he hides his feelings because having them out in the open meant having a weakness, it makes him vulnerable in the worst possible way.

But Mickey isn’t just a ball of self-hatred and world-anger, he has things and people he genuinely likes. He has his vices just like everyone else, he smokes too much (both cigarettes and weed), drinks even though he’s underage, and often releases stress by firing a gun. Usually while smoking and/or drinking. Mickey isn’t one for friends, he’s not nice or agreeable and is often just difficult to be around, so that’s probably why he’s closest with his younger sister Mandy. He would literally kill for her, and he has even tried before until she called him off. He’s not close with the rest of his family, they’re more accomplices and occasional allies rather than friends or family. The Milkovich family sticks together but they also need to watch out for each other. Mickey has the greatest faith in Mandy, he doesn’t tell her everything (because it’s none of her fucking business what he gets up to) but he trusts her and would have her back in an instance. If he knew that their father gets drunk, confuses Mandy for her mother and rapes her, he would actually stand up to his father and most likely attempt to kill him. You don't fuck with the people Mickey cares about.

His only non-family friend is Ian, and with Ian comes everything Mickey wants to hide about himself. Mickey is gay, enjoys bottoming more than topping, and because of that hates himself a bit more every day, fears for his life a bit more every day. Him and Ian have been hooking up with each other for over two years (although it’s been broken up by the two times he’s been sent to juvie, both of which over Ian) but are not boyfriends. Labels mean there is something between them, it would mean that they have feelings for each other that extend further than a convenient lay. Feelings put them at risk. While Ian is the closest person to Mickey he’s kept at an arm’s length for safety reasons. The horrible part is that they’re a bit in love, no matter how destructive their relationship.

Just like Mickey doesn’t do feelings he doesn’t really do affection either. Again being affectionate with someone means he’s vulnerable and putting the other person at risk. It’s much easier to tell Ian that “you kiss me and I’ll cut your fucking tongue out” than to open himself up to potential pain. For a gut who doesn’t want to be touched he’s pretty physical. Actions speak louder than words, which is good for him considering he’s shit at talking about how he feels or what he wants but bad for him because he can’t even show it unless he’s ready to explode. He bottles everything up until he can’t handle it anymore but often his release comes too late.

The root of Mickey’s personality is basically bad parenting. His father, Terry, is a homophobic drunk who has been in and out of prison most of his life. The reason Mickey is so shut in on himself is because he knows Terry wouldn’t hesitate to kill him if he found out Mickey is gay. So of course when Terry does find out he beats up Ian and Mickey, pulls a gun on them, and pistol whips Mickey until he blacks out. Then, he calls a prostitute to “fuck the gay out” of him while Ian is forced to watch causing Mickey to shut down even further. He’s forced to marry the prostitute, Svetlana, and seems pretty chill about it until you realize that he’s only doing it because it’s either marry her or risk his and Ian’s lives. Considering one of the times he went to juvie was to save Ian’s life, it wasn’t that hard of a choice. But he can’t explain any of this to anyone because he doesn’t know how to put any of his feelings into words. (Before he gets married he tells Ian that “not everyone gets to blurt out how they fucking feel every minute” before kissing him for the second time in their two-year affair but Ian still doesn’t get it.) He’s pissed that Ian fucked off to enlist in the army and is leaving him alone even though he kept pushing him away.

Mickey is a bit contradictory in his sexuality. He’s so deep in the closet that his first instinct is to run whenever something bad happens and considers killing people who find out but he’s also okay with the fact he enjoys bottoming. It doesn’t match his hyper-masculine bravado but as he says, “liking what I like don’t make me a bitch,” and he believes that. He might as well be secure about one thing about himself.

He knows how to get the job done even at the cost of his rather volatile sense of self worth. But he’s so good at hiding everything that gets to him that when anyone looks at Mickey they see a cocky, self-assured asshole rather than someone who is unsure about himself.

SAMPLES
Thread: one and two

Prose:
Mickey ran his thumb across his lower lip. He’s has had enough of this shit. A death match? Were they serious? He has no problem killing any fucker who deserves it nor does he have a problem beating the shit out of someone just because he’s bored, but he doesn’t kill for the amusement of the crowd. (Maybe if the payoff was high enough, but he didn’t see a substantial amount of cash coming his way if he made it out of here.) He’s Mickey fucking Milkovich and no one can make him do something he doesn’t want to do.

And they wanted to see what he could do, that much was clear with all the weapons lying around, but he wasn’t going to give them the pleasure. In some sick way it reminded him of home, of his kitchen pantry stocked to the brim with weapons rather than canned peas or boxes of cereal. That’s probably why he knew how to use weapons more than he knew how to use the stove.

Mickey looked around at the weapons, stubbornly not moving from his spot in front of the Gamemakers. There were no guns to be seen which, truth be told, made him a bit wary considering that’s what he was best at. Life at home was survival of the fittest at the best of times and guns definitely made his life easier. He could use some of the other weapons they provided if he had to, he just didn’t want to.

He knew that he was supposed to impress them, but he never did anything to impress others. Instead he decided to give them something to remember him by. So in true Mickey style he gave them the middle finger and walked away.

What is your character scored:
AbilitiesMickey doesn't have any supernatural abilities, and if you asked him he'd say something like "I don't fuckin need 'em" and maybe he's right. Growing up in the Southside of Chicago (aka the wrong side of the tracks), and as a Milkovich nonetheless, has taught him all that he needs to survive. He can take a punch and dish them out even better. Break a few of his bones? Shoot him? It hurts like a bitch but he won't complain about it, he knows that will only result in more pain. He's a scrappy fighter but he knows how to hold his own, be it with his fists or anything he can fashion into a weapon. Mickey knows how to handle an assortment of guns and he's a pretty good shot when his emotions don't take over.

Being a Milkovich means he needs to know how to fend for himself and having no problem doing it (at one point he tells his brothers that he needs to kill someone and they discuss the best way to get away from it before choosing weapons they store in the pantry). Where he's from his family is feared and Mickey certainly helped that reputation. He’s a survivalist but he’s never been out of the city.
